Places to Visit:

Towers of Silence, Zoroaster's Fire Temple, Dowlatabad Garden, Ziyaeyeh School, Fahadan County

Towers of Silence

In accordance with Zoroastrian laws governing the sanctity of earth, fire, air and water (four principal elements of the nature), Zoroastrians can claim to be the First Ecologists in the world. According to their beliefs about the purity of the earth, dead bodies were not buried but left in these uncovered stone towers so that vultures could pick the bones clean. In Achaemenid times the dead were exposed and their bones later gathered to be placed in ossuaries or tombs in rock.

Fire Temple

Zoroastrians come from around the world to see this Ateshkadeh, often referred to as the Zoroastrian Fire Temple, said to have been burning since about AD 470. Visible through a window from the entrance hall, the flame was transferred to Ardakan in 1174, then to Yazd in 1474 and to its present site in 1940. Above the entrance you can see the symbolic bird-man, the Fravahar symbol.

Dowlatabad Garden

This garden has an aggregate of different buildings which were designed and constructed during the time of Mohammad Taqi Khan in the Zandieh era. It was the residence of Khan and his government and officials. The wind trapper of this garden is 33 meters high and is considered an architectural masterpiece and a symbol of the Yazdi architects' genius, mental ability, talent and art.

Ziyaeyeh School or Alaxander Prison

Alexanders prison, which was neither built by Alexander the great nor a prison, but a 15th-century domed school which is quite an interesting sight with a cafe in the 'prison room'.

Fahadan District

One of the oldest and historical districts of Yazd.
