Nakhl Cermony Day

The Nakhl in Yazd is a huge structure weighing several tons consisting of interwoven carved woods in the shape of a very large leaf or, as said above, the cypress tree. Traveling through the cities in central desert of Iran, one may see so many of these Nakhls in the corner of the mosques and tekyehs. But the ones in Yazd and Taft, a nearby town, are considered to be the oldest and tallest in Iran, dating back to 450 something years ago and the Safavid dynasty.
Throughout the year, the Nakhl in the corner of medieval Amir Chakhmaq tekyeh stands by the old mosque only to be photographed by visitors. But at the beginning of the month of Moharram, this gigantic wooden masterpiece is decorated generously by large pieces of black fabrics, daggers, swords and mirrors for the festival of Ashura.

Water Museum

Throughout the ages the lives of people living in Yazd, sandwiched as it is between two desert, has been dominated by water. The incredible system of Qanats (underground water channels) have for millennia directed water to where it is needed, safe from the parching sun. The Yazd water museum examines the role water has played to Yazdis through the ages. It also describes the lives of those very brave men who dug and maintained the tunnels in order to keep the city alive.

zorkhaneh-yazd-iran

 Zorkhaneh (Iranian Traditional Gym)

The traditional gymnasium in which varzesh-e bastani is practiced is known as the zurkhaneh, literally the "house of strength". An aspiring member may be a male from any social class or religion, but they must first spend at least a month watching from the audience before they can join. Traditionally, the zurkhanehs demanded no payment from their athletes, and depended instead on public donations. In return, the zurkhaneh provided community services and protection.Zurkhanehs have commonly had strong political affiliations, either advocating or denouncing particular governments. This type of sports diplomacy is said to be a natural extension of the patriotic nature of zurkhaneh training dating back to the days when pahlevans served in the king's court.

Towers of Silence

In accordance with Zoroastrian laws governing the sanctity of earth, fire, air and water (four principal elements of the nature), Zoroastrians can claim to be the First Ecologists in the world. According to their beliefs about the purity of the earth, dead bodies were not buried but left in these uncovered stone towers so that vultures could pick the bones clean. In Achaemenid times the dead were exposed and their bones later gathered to be placed in ossuaries or tombs in rock.
